What you disregard recedes. What you attend to persists.

Holding hatred for someone is a quiet depletion. You don’t need to speak it, or even let them know. You only need to notice, when they cross your mind, that you’re still stuck there. The most draining part is that the person you hate goes on living as usual, eating as usual, sleeping as usual. You bear all the emotional cost, with nothing to show for it.

Hatred is a one-sided relationship. You stay connected to someone in your mind, while they remain disconnected from you. You replay their words and actions, analyze their motives, rehearse what you wish you had said. You hold conversations with them in your head, while they are not even present in reality. You are not relating to them—you are relating to your own reactions.

Holding hatred for someone is often mistaken for a form of defense. You tell yourself that hating them protects you from being hurt again, stops you from repeating the same mistakes.

But hatred and vigilance are two different things. Vigilance is clear-eyed—it lets you see a person clearly, make a rational choice, and move forward. Hatred is sticky—it keeps you in place after seeing them clearly, chewing on what they did wrong, again and again.

Vigilance moves you forward. Hatred keeps you stuck. You don’t have to like someone in order to let them go. You only need to stop holding conversations with them in your mind.

When you notice yourself replaying thoughts of the same person, relief does not come from figuring out why they did what they did—it comes from allowing yourself not to need the answer anymore.

Holding hatred for someone is, in a way, a distorted way of affirming your own rightness. You repeatedly prove that they were wrong, that you were wronged, that you stand in a position of injury. In the short term, this can give you a faint sense of superiority—you feel more clear-headed, more principled than they are. But in the long run, it only pulls you closer to them. Hatred is a form of inverted intimacy. You cannot hate a stranger—you can only hate someone you once cared about.

When you hold hatred for someone, there is still a thread between you. You keep it alive with your emotions, while they may not even know it still exists. You can’t let go not because you still care, but because you haven’t fully reclaimed yourself. You left a part of yourself in that experience with them—and hatred keeps you there.

The most direct cost of holding hatred for someone is the mental space it consumes. Your attention is finite. Your emotional capacity is finite. When you keep part of your attention fixed on one person, you reduce the space available for creating, thinking, and feeling.

Those recurring angry thoughts are not reminding you of something important—they are simply occupying memory. You have only so much energy in this life, and you’re spending a significant part of it on someone who is no longer part of it.

Not hating someone doesn’t mean you have to like them. Not hating them means removing them from your internal theater. You no longer need to keep a seat for them, no longer need to prepare a rebuttal. They are no longer in your life—so let them leave your mind as well. Letting them go is not forgiving them—it’s freeing yourself.

The real problem with holding hatred for someone is not that they are in your heart—it is that you are in theirs. The more you hate, the more they occupy you. They have done nothing, yet they have become part of your daily life. Your anger has become a thread connecting you to them, and the harder you pull, the tighter it gets. The longer you stay with them, the further you drift from your own life.

Letting go of hatred is not done all at once. It happens every time you think of them and choose not to continue the thought. Every time anger rises and you choose to place your attention back on yourself. It is no longer asking “how could they,” but starting to ask “why am I still thinking about them.”

Holding hatred for someone drains only one person in the end: you. They continue their life. You continue your depletion.

You can keep a space for them in your heart—or you can take that space back and return it to yourself. The choice is yours. You can choose to hold the hatred, or you can choose to let them go. The latter won’t change what they did—but it will change how much they can still affect you.

Do not carry hatred for anyone in your heart. Not because they don’t deserve it, but because you deserve not to lose your peace for anyone. You are not letting them off—you are taking yourself back.
