– It’s winter. The days are shorter, colder, darker, and you might find this depressing. I feel like a lot of people do.

时值寒冬。白昼变短,天气转冷,天色渐暗,你或许会为此感到消沉。我想很多人都有同感。

A lot of people already feel as if though they’ve been in a spiritual winter, they feel like it’s been a while since the sun has shone in their life. So with winter just beginning, they feel unequipped to deal with the even further darkness. But what if you flip the script? What if this winter was the best thing that ever happened to you?

The wintertime has the unique characteristic of cold, unforgiving consistency. It forces people indoors, locking them into deep grooves of repeated behavior for months and months on end, that either disintegrate their character over time or builds them into something formidable.

So why not leverage that? Use this season to lock in new default behaviors, a chain of automatic actions that will completely transform the way you feel with each passing day, actions that level up your character and make you more satisfied with being alive.

If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done. So what exactly do you do, and how do you stay consistent? Well, the first step might sound counterintuitive, but it’s crucial. The first step is to do nothing, and get better at doing nothing.

如果想拥有从未得到之物,就必须甘愿尝试从未做过之事。那么具体该做什么,又该如何坚持?第一步听起来或许有悖常理,却至关重要,那就是:什么都不做,并学会把”什么都不做”这件事做得更好。

Most people doubt their ability to implement positive behaviors into their life because they’re living in a constant state of reactivity rather than proactivity. They’re driven into compulsive behavior because they are terrified of their own default mode network.

大多数人之所以怀疑自己能否将积极习惯融入生活,是因为他们长期处于被动反应状态,而非主动掌控的状态。他们被卷入强迫性的行为模式,只因对自己默认模式网络的运作感到恐惧。

The default mode network, or DMN, is a network of brain regions that are most active when you are not doing anything in particular. When you’re just sitting there, reflecting on the past or future and engaging in self-referential thought. It’s your default mode. No phone, no internet, no people. Just you, existing.

默认模式网络(简称DMN),是指当你没有进行任何特定活动时最为活跃的大脑区域网络。当你静坐沉思、回顾过往或展望未来、进行自我反思时,它便处于运作状态。这就是你的默认模式:没有手机,没有网络,没有他人,只有你自己,纯粹地存在着。

Most people don’t want to experience this feeling because it’s boring, and we already invented the answer to boredom. But what if boredom was your answer? Instead of constantly running from the feeling of baseline existence, what if you became comfortable with it so that you can start running towards something else, something bigger?

Stephen Pressfield, in his book, “The War of Art”, describes this force he calls resistance. It’s an almost metaphysical force that prevents you from doing what you must do. Everyone on earth is familiar with the feeling of resistance.

It takes many and wears many masks; procrastination, rationalization, avoidance, bargaining, but fundamentally it boils down to the same internal physiological feeling. It’s like an inner tension, an electric ball of stress you feel when you think about doing what you ought to do. It’s a type of fear of perceived pain.

“阻力”千变万化,戴着形形色色的面具:拖延、合理化、逃避、讨价还价……但归根结底都源自同样的内在生理感受。那是一种内心的紧绷感,当你想到必须去做应做之事时,便会感到一团带电的压力在体内聚集。这本质上是对预期痛苦的恐惧。

Resistance hijacks the mind. It whispers in your ear that you’ll do it eventually, just not today. That’s all it’s ever been, a feeling masquerading as whatever it needs to in order to stop you from growing. Identify this feeling, learn what it feels like and use it as a compass. The more resistance you feel towards something, the more important that thing is to your flourishing here in this life.

“阻力”会劫持你的心智,在你的耳边低语:你终究会去做,但不是今天。它始终如此,是一种伪装成各种模样的感受,只为阻碍你成长。请识别这种感受,熟悉它的形态,并将它作为你的指南针。你对某件事感受到的阻力越大,那件事在你生命成长中就越是重要。

You probably already know what you need to do, you already have at least one thing you must stop doing and one thing that you’ve always wanted to start doing. You almost certainly can already think of a behavior that you suspect that if you were to do that thing with unquestioning, machine-like consistency over the next six months, you’d be a completely different person by the time the sun started shining again, a healthier person, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

你或许早已明白自己该做什么,至少已经意识到必须戒除某个习惯,也开始思考某个始终想启动的计划。你脑海中很可能已经浮现出一个具体行为:如果能在未来六个月里,以机器般精准的恒心去实践它,那么待到阳光重新普照之时,你必将蜕变成截然不同的人:一个身心与灵魂都更健康的自己。

Now is the time to make the decision that you’re going to do it. The only question left is how to solve the problem of consistency, and the answer to the problem is easier than you might think.

现在正是下定决心行动的时刻。唯一剩下的问题是如何实现持之以恒,而答案,其实比想象中简单。

Part two, staying consistent.

第二篇章:持之以恒

Imagine there was a magic button sitting there in front of you, a big red magic button with pixie dust floating around everywhere. A little fairy singing a song, three blind mice playing the violin in the corner, cheering you on. I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.

想象一下,此刻在你眼前有个神奇的按钮:一个镶着闪亮魔法粉末的大红按钮。小精灵在旁边哼唱,角落里有三只瞎眼老鼠正拉着小提琴为你喝彩……好吧,我也不知道自己在胡扯些什么。

So this magic button, when you press it, automatically, whatever habit you think of that you want to be consistent with, you’re just consistent with it. You’d never miss a day, you’d just be consistent with that habit no matter what. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

这个神奇的按钮,当你按下它时。无论你想到什么想坚持的习惯,都会自动变得持之以恒。你不会错过任何一天,无论发生什么都能持续践行那个习惯。这不是很美妙吗?

If the magic habit button existed, it would be very easy to think about what habit you would want to implement into your life that would radically transform you six months down the line. You could start visualizing this amazing body you would have when summer rolls around. You could probably learn pretty good Spanish or German in six months.

如果存在这样一个神奇的习惯按钮,我们很容易就能想清楚该把什么习惯融入生活,那种能在半年后彻底改变自己的习惯。你完全可以想象明年夏天来临时,自己将拥有多么美妙的身材。或许六个月时间,就足够你掌握流利的西班牙语或德语。

If you were able to delete the concept of failure from your mind, then it starts to become very easy to get excited and enamored and motivated by the idea of implementing a new habit. But since we’re old and jaded, because of past failure, we don’t tend to do this. We limit ourselves psychologically because we figure I’m just not the new habit kind of guy.

如果能彻底清除心中对“失败”的执念,践行新习惯的念头就会自然焕发出令人心动的光彩与动力。可我们历经沧桑,被过往挫败磨钝了心气,总不敢这样奢望。于是画地为牢,用“我本就不是能养成新习惯的人”这类念头将自己禁锢。

But that button exists, and that button is called a decision. You might think I’m crazy or oversimplifying it, and I definitely am, but bear with me for a second. You’ve felt this before, you’ve felt the power of this magic button before in your life, and it happened when you were so disgusted with yourself. So disgusted by the way you’ve been living, by your DGen activities that you said, “I’m fucking sick of this, I’m tired of it. I’m just going to do the better thing instead of the bad thing, starting now,” and you just do it. And you’re consistent. All of a sudden, magically, out of pure frustration, your life has changed and you start doing the good thing instead of the bad thing. Well, what happened? That is the power of decision, a true decision.

但这哥的按钮确实存在,它就叫“决定”。你或许觉得我疯了,或是把问题过分简化。我承认确实如此,但请先听我说完。这种感受你曾经历过,你体会过这个神奇按钮的力量,就在你对自己厌恶至极的时刻。当你对当下的生活方式、对那些消磨心志的行为感到彻底反胃时,你曾吼道:“我他妈受够了,真的受够了。从现在起,老子要选对的路,不走歪路。”然后你就真的做到了。并且持之以恒。突然之间,魔法般地,在纯粹的挫败感中,你的人生开始转变,从此择善而行。那么,究竟发生了什么?这就是“决定”的力量,一种真正决断的力量。

Decision comes from the Latin root decidere or decidere, which means to cut off. In other words, to delete any other option. You don’t fall for any other kind of rationalization, you say, “This is the path forward,” and you burn the bridges behind you. In other words, completely cutting off any other possibilities to focus on a single path.

“决定”(decision)一词源自古拉丁语“decidere”,本意是“切断”。换言之,就是删除所有其他选项。你不会再被任何借口迷惑,只宣告“此路向前”,并亲手焚毁身后所有退路。这意味着彻底斩断其他可能性,将全部心力聚焦于唯一道路。

A true decision is freeing. When you have no back doors, you don’t have to deal with the mental burden of weighing and considering other options. There is only one path, nothing else is available to you. Rather than tensing up and having to rely on willpower to figure out which of the things before you is the right option, you’ve already decided, that’s not a game you have to play anymore. You’ve simply pressed a button, and you walk the righteous path. You submit to a process that’s outside of your control, and the thing just happens automatically.

真正的决定带来自由。当你切断所有退路,就无需再承受权衡取舍的精神负担。前路仅此一条,别无选择。不必绷紧神经依赖意志力辨别方向。你既已决定,便无需再玩选择的游戏。你只是按下了按钮,从此行走在正确的道路上,投身于超越自我掌控的进程,一切自会水到渠成。

What I’m getting at here is the easiest way to make sure you’re consistent is to be as consistent as possible. (chuckles) Thanks, genius. Yeah, I know.

What I mean is it’s easier if you do it every single day without a question. You’re not making some weird schedule that’s easier on yourself, you do it on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. No, you wake up and you do it every single day. You know this because you made a decision about it, and now it’s outside of your control. You simply submit to the process, you don’t have to think about, “Oh, you know, maybe there’s thes e off days or what-” Just every single day. It’s actually far easier to be mechanical about it, to just like take your brain out and put it on the kitchen counter, go do the activity, and then think about all the rationalizations after you do it, right. You kind of lobotomize yourself and do the thing you already thought of before, and now your feet just do the thing.

我想说的是,如果你每天都雷打不动地去做,事情反而更简单。别给自己搞什么奇怪的宽松日程,比如周三、周五、周日才做。不,你醒来就去做,每一天。你心里清楚,因为你已经做了决定,现在这事已不由你控制。你只需臣服于这个流程,不用琢磨”哦,也许该休息几天”之类的。就是每一天,仅此而已。  其实把它机械化反而更轻松,就像把大脑摘下来搁在厨房台面上,先去把事做了,事后再去想那些合理化解释,对吧。你给自己做个”脑叶切除”,只管执行之前已经想好的事,然后让双脚自动去走就行了。

It’s like you kind of accidentally go to the gym. It’s like, “Oh, whoops, I’m going to the gym.” It’s like, “Oh yeah, I don’t really feel like it but, oops, I’m going to the gym.” “Oh yeah, this fucking sucks but, oops, I’m putting on my shoes,” and, “Oh, you know, this all sucks, and now I’m running now. Oh, it doesn’t suck so much.”

就像你莫名其妙就去了健身房。”哎呀,怎么就到健身房了。””是啊,其实不太想去,但哎呀,人已经来了。””这破事真烦,但哎呀,鞋都穿好了。””唉,一切都糟透了,然后我现在跑起来了。哦,好像也没那么糟。”

Does this make any sense? In all of my years of doing habit shit, talking about it, overthinking it, that’s the secret. It’s literally to lobotomize yourself, realize that sometimes sucks, sometimes things that are good for you feel bad before you do them, but you say, “Oops, I’m doing it anyways.”

这么说能明白吗?这么多年折腾习惯、谈论习惯、想太多习惯,我悟出的秘诀就是这个,字面意义上的”脑叶切除”:承认有时候就是会不爽,承认对你好的事在做之前往往感觉糟糕,然后你说:”哎呀,反正我做了再说。”

Just don’t care whether you’re motivated or not, don’t care whether it feels good or not, right. It’s like, it’s good for you and you’ll like it. There’s something in there that you really want to do and you know it’s really good for you, and you’ll like it. You’ll like the byproduct of it, you’ll like everything about it except for this little rationalization beforehand. Oopsie daisy, you don’t care, you just do it anyways. That’s the secret.

别管有没有动力,别管感觉好不好,对吧。反正对你有好处,你会喜欢的。你心里清楚,那里面有你真正想做的事,你知道它对你极好,你会喜欢的。你会喜欢它的副产品,喜欢它的一切,除了事前那点小小的自我说服。哎呀无所谓,你做就是了。这就是秘诀。

And in retrospect, six months down the line you can look back and say, “Wow, I’m glad I kind of just shut my brain off, entered into a self-improvement cryosleep and woke up a superior version of myself. I am no longer a degenerate, thank you me.”

I’ve been wanting to tell you guys something for about three years now, but I haven’t been able to because it wasn’t done yet. But now it’s done, so I’m going to tell you about it now.

回头再看,六个月之后你可以感慨:”幸好我当时把大脑关了,进入自我提升的冷冻休眠,醒来时已是升级版的自己。我不再是那个颓废的人了,感谢我自己。”有件事我想告诉你们大概三年了,但一直没说,因为还没完成。不过现在完成了,所以我现在可以说了。
